Saw I, II, III, IV, V, VI... When Will It End?

I guess Lions Gate intends to give birth to as many of these freaking Saw movies as it can, and enjoy whatever little profits each sequel produces for them.

What I don't understand is why audiences continue to insist on seeing each preposterous sequel, encouraging Lions Gate to continue producing them.

These are the kinds of films that one would expect to see go straight to home video, but, because of how successful each has apparently been for the mini studio, they continue to enjoy theatrical releases as well.

The 5th installment of the series will be in theaters later this year, in time for Halloween. And I just heard that a 6th film will go into production this year, for a 2009 release. Should we expect a 7th and an 8th? Possibly! They've taken it this far, so, why not go even further.

URGHHH!!

This is reminiscent of the “Hellraiser” phenomenon. So many of those films were made, each one more graphic and gory than the one that came before it. I am a horror movie fan, but these movies are disturbing. Movies like Saw (and Hostel is another good example) are so violent it’s almost pornographic… What does it say about us as a society that they are so successful? Are we so desensitized that we have to see someone’s head torn off to be affected? The best horror flicks leave something to the imagination.

Pornographic indeed! The term "torture porn" has been used to describe those movies - Hostel, Saw, etc... I love that term! I don't remember who coined it, but it's so appropriate.

And what does it say about us as a society that they are so successful? Remember the Milgram Experiment?

Milgram Experiment...an apropos reference indeed. I'm impressed Obenson :o)

Hey, they came, they 'Saw' and they conquered (:D)... And hope to do it again, and again, and again... Upping the voltage each time, no doubt, and collecting $$$ as they hit the switch.

And why do people keep going to see these kinds of movies? Not sure. Who knows? Even Michael Haneke's exploration of violence, 'Funny Games,' doesn't answer the question.

Picking up on what 'P' says though, about leaving something to the imagination, at least the voiolence in 'Funny Games' is mostly implied, except in the odd jarring moment - jarring because up until that point you don't actually seen the violence being executed, just the psychological aftermath. The effect is really quite disturbing, nonetheless, maybe even moreso for not having actually seen it take place.

Hmm, I guess the Milgram Experiment is even more apt in this instance seeing as there's a visual disconnect between the violence and the execution of it. And still, it begs the question... Why!?

A Saw V is coming out??!!! VI?

    Wow.

I saw the first one. I liked it. I saw the second one and was disappointed. I stopped there.

My sentiments exactly. I HATE multiple sequels, and I HATE torture porn with a passion. Both of them together is just unbearable; it makes me want to go postal on the studio execs responsible...

@ Wendy - Yeah, I'd lump "Funny Games" together with the rest of them. It's like torture porn for the art-house crowd. But it's still torture porm. I don't buy all the talk about it being some critique of those films like Hostel and Saw that gave birth to the "torture porn" label, or commentary of American bourgeois complacency, etc, etc, etc... I just thought it was a pointless excercise, and don't understand why he felt the urge to remake his original.

@ Baby - I saw the first one as well, and thought it was actually somewhat clever, relative to similar mainstream films. I caught the second installment on cable some time ago, and thought it was laughable! I haven't seen any since then, and don't plan on doing so.

@ IW - You just gave me an idea... I think I'll post an entry specifically on multiple film sequels - the best and the worst.

Since everyone in here is blatantly against the saw series, i figured i'd stick up for it. I have been a saw fan since day 1 and will continue to watch these movies until the plot is complete.

first off, let's face it...if he was just twisting their arm he wouldn't be getting much of a point across.

if you could actually take the time to get past the gore of the movie, the plot is the most developed and thoughtout of any horror film i've seen since hitchcock.

you have to look past the surface to see the real genius in these films.

i do not go to see what twisted new ways of torture jigsaw has concocked; rather, to see how the mystery behind his persona and how the action surrounding his "games" will develop.
